When Dalrymple was growing up in the 1930s, clinical irrationalism caused many circumcisions and tonsillectomies to be done, with no benefit to the patient whatever.

Of the procedure he himself underwent, Dalrymple writes:

The reward

I was one of the many middle-class children whose tonsils were sacrificed to the need of ear, nose, and throat surgeons to increase their incomes.

He is, he says,

not in the least bitter about it because of the ice cream I was given to eat after the operation.
