How the pen-name was devised

Dalrymple thinks Dominic Lawson might have thought it up

The Spectator asked me to write a medical column, about what it was like being a doctor.

He needed a pseudonym,

because I was talking about patients in a hospital and a prison — I needed a disguise. I think it was Dominic Lawson who thought of the name. It was a very good one, because I wanted to sound old-fashioned and bad-tempered.
