The kind of losers who turn to terror

The evidence of Mohammedans’ own eyes and of their own lives, as well as that of statistics, is quite clear, writes Dalrymple. Mohammedan immigrants and their descendants are more likely than other South Asian immigrants and their descendants to

  • be poor
  • live in overcrowded conditions
  • be unemployed
  • have low levels of educational achievement
  • (above all) be imprisoned

Dalrymple points out that the refusal to educate females to their full capacity

is a terrible handicap in a society in which, perhaps regrettably, prosperity requires two household incomes.

The Mohammedan idea

that one is already in possession of the final revealed truth, leading to an inherently superior way of life, inhibits adaptation to a technically more advanced society.

Muslim micro-totalitarianism

Why the vicious are drawn to Islam

An interviewer asks why barbarous and cruel people look to Mohammedanism. Dalrymple explains that one of the factors is that conversion to Islam allows the depraved man

to think that he has not surrendered to the predominant society around him, against which he believes himself to have been in opposition for most of his life.

Dalrymple explains also that, apart from a love of violence and killing, a big part of the appeal of Islam for young men in Western countries is

the dominance that it gives them over women.

Micro-totalitarianism

The behaviour of the large numbers of Muslims in British prisons, Dalrymple points out,

is not that of religious persons. They are not interested in halal meat, they are not interested in praying five times a day, they are not interested in keeping Ramadan (except as a reason not to go to court), but they are very interested in preventing their sisters from going out with a boy of their own choosing.

If you go into the centres of towns with large Muslim populations,

you will see young Muslim men partaking in what I would say are generally pretty disgusting activities of popular culture, but you won’t see any women.

Islamists intimidate women into wearing the veil, for in Western societies

there is a micro-totalitarian climate. To ask people what they mean by it is very difficult; it is a bit like asking people in North Korea whether they like the government.

Brussels perambulation

Screen Shot 2015-04-26 at 23.10.41The capital of Europe combines the greyness of bureaucracy with the gaudiness of modern popular culture’s worst aspects

Finding himself in Brussels, Dalrymple stays in a hotel

among whose amenities was 24-hour access to pornography.

In the room is a hotel copy of The Golden Book, which Dalrymple peruses. It includes an article on the place of women in the Belgian armed forces, illustrated by

Screen Shot 2015-04-26 at 23.41.35Stepping out into the littered, crumbling city, Dalrymple is

invited into several sex shows by men who did not easily take no for an answer. Drunks were sleeping in doorways, and very large numbers of male youths loitered.

is the best (and most varied) in the world.

But

not even this could lend charm to the scene. One had the impression of walking through an updated print by Grosz.

A very large proportion of the loiterers

were Moroccan in origin, dressed in the international uniform of the modern slum. They seemed drawn to this seedy environment as flies to a carcass.

Screen Shot 2015-04-26 at 23.55.23Not a single woman of Moroccan origin was to be seen.

Where were they, the women of Moroccan origin? The answer was evident after the sun came up. Large numbers of women of Moroccan origin, dressed in a non-European way, were in the streets, as if a nocturnal curse had lifted. Fewer men of Moroccan origin were now in evidence.

Theodore on Theodoor

Submission, the 2004 film for which Theo van Gogh paid with his life

The source of Mohammedan rage against the Dutch filmmaker

Theodoor van Gogh, writes Dalrymple, was

a brash and combative man, who took his freedom of expression for granted.

But such freedom, Dalrymple points out,

is an historical exception rather than an historical rule, a reversible achievement rather than a free gift of God. There are many who would rather kill than brook contradiction of their opinions or beliefs, even while they live in the most tolerant of societies.

Dutch confidence

that unconditional tolerance can be on its own the unifying principle of a viable society has been dented. For tolerance to work, it must be reciprocal; tolerance appears to the jihadist mere weakness. Unilateral tolerance in a world of intolerance is like unilateral disarmament in a world of armed camps.

Screen Shot 2015-04-22 at 09.24.46Van Gogh’s work exposed

a raw nerve of Muslim identity in Western Europe: the abuse of women.

This abuse is

essential for people of Muslim descent for maintaining any sense of separate cultural identity in the homogenising solution of modern mass society.

Screen Shot 2015-04-22 at 09.28.45Were it not for the abuse of women, Islam would go the way of the Church of England.

Mohammedanism

is as vulnerable in Europe to the forces of secularisation as Christianity has proved to be. The majority of Muslims in Europe, particularly the young, have a weak and tenuous connection to their ancestral religion. Their level and intensity of belief is low; pop music interests them more. Far from being fanatics, they are lukewarm believers at best.

Screen Shot 2015-04-22 at 09.29.49The abuse of women appeals to men because

it gives them a sense of power, however humiliated they may feel in other spheres.

The oppression of women by Muslim men in Western Europe

Screen Shot 2015-04-22 at 09.39.44gives those men at the same time a sexual partner, a domestic servant, and a gratifying sense of power, while allowing them also to live an otherwise westernised life. For the men, it is convenient. Religious sanction for the oppression of women (whether theologically justified or not) is the main attraction of Islam to young men in an increasingly secular world.
