Latrine-cleaners and politicians

Dalrymple writes:

Someone has to do politics, just as people have to do other unpleasant jobs, such as cleaning lavatories.

Dalrymple enjoys Eric Ambler’s 1974 novel Doctor Frigo and reflects that

if you are not interested in politics, politics will sooner or later be interested in you.

Fuck Tha Police

Screen Shot 2015-11-06 at 07.38.38Dalrymple reports that this

charming little ballad,

performed by the gangsta rap group Niggaz With Attitude, is one of UK finance minister George Osborne’s favourites. It contains lines, says Dalrymple, that are

beautifully expressed and just the right message for the black youth of Los Angeles.

Screen Shot 2015-11-06 at 07.48.53Here are the lyrics:

Right about now NWA court is in full effect.
Judge Dre presiding in the case of NWA versus the police department.
Prosecuting attorneys are MC Ren Ice Cube and Eazy motheruckin’ E.
Order order order. Ice Cube take the motherfuckin’ stand.
Do you swear to tell the truth the whole truth
and nothin but the truth so help your black arse?

Screen Shot 2015-11-06 at 07.36.41Why don’t you tell everybody what the fuck you gotta say?

Fuck tha police
Comin’ straight from the underground
Young nigga got it bad ’cause I’m brown
And not the other colour so police think
They have the authority to kill a minority

Attitude

Attitude

Fuck that shit, ’cause I ain’t tha one
For a punk motherfucka with a badge and a gun
To be beatin’ on, and throwin’ in jail
We could go toe to toe in the middle of a cell

Fuckin’ with me ’cause I’m a teenager
With a little bit of gold and a pager
Searchin’ my car, lookin’ for the product
Thinkin’ every nigga is sellin narcotics

You’d rather see me in the pen
Then me and Lorenzo rollin’ in the Benzo
Beat tha police outta shape
And when I’m finished, bring the yellow tape
To tape off the scene of the slaughter
Still gettin’ swoll off bread and water

Screen Shot 2015-11-06 at 07.53.55I don’t know if they fags or what
Search a nigga down and grabbin’ his nuts
And on the other hand, without a gun they can’t get none
But don’t let it be a black and a white one
’cause they slam ya down to the street top
Black police showin’ out for the white cop

Screen Shot 2015-11-06 at 07.52.16Ice Cube will swarm
On any motherfucka in a blue uniform
Just ’cause I’m from the CPT, punk police are afraid of me
A young nigga on a warpath
And when I’m finished, it’s gonna be a bloodbath
Of cops, dyin’ in LA
Yo Dre, I got somethin’ to say

Fuck the police. Fuck the police. Fuck the police. Fuck the police.

Screen Shot 2015-11-06 at 07.53.32M.C. Ren, will you please give your testimony to the jury about this fucked-up incident.

Fuck tha police and Ren said it with authority
because the niggaz on the street is a majority.
A gang is with whoever I’m stepping
and the mutherfuckin’ weapon
is kept in a stash box, for the so-called law
wishin’ Ren was a nigga that they never saw

Lights start flashin’ behind me
But they’re scared of a nigga so they mace me to blind me
But that shit don’t work, I just laugh
Because it gives ’em a hint not to step in my path

Screen Shot 2015-11-06 at 07.58.10To the police I’m sayin’ fuck you punk
Readin’ my rights and shit, it’s all junk
Pullin’ out a silly club, so you stand
With a fake-arsed badge and a gun in your hand

But take off the gun so you can see what’s up
And we’ll go at it punk, I’m a fuck you up

Make ya think I’m a kick your ass
But drop your gat, and Ren’s gonna blast
I’m sneaky as fuck when it comes to crime
But I’m a smoke ’em now, and not next time

Screen Shot 2015-11-06 at 07.59.37Smoke any motherfucka that sweats me
Or any asshole that threatens me
I’m a sniper with a hell of a scope
Takin’ out a cop or two, they can’t cope with me

The motherfuckin’ villain that’s mad
With potential to get bad as fuck
So I’m a turn it around
Put in my clip, yo, and this is the sound
Ya, somethin’ like that, but it all depends on the size of the gat

Screen Shot 2015-11-06 at 07.58.21Takin’ out a police would make my day
But a nigga like Ren don’t give a fuck to say

Fuck the police. Fuck the police. Fuck the police. Fuck the police.

Police, open now. We have a warrant for Eazy-E’s arrest.
Get down and put your hands up where I can see ’em.
Just shut the fuck up and get your motherfuckin’ arse on the floor.

and tell the jury how you feel abou this bullshit.

Screen Shot 2015-11-06 at 07.58.53I’m tired of the motherfuckin’ jackin
Sweatin’ my gang while I’m chillin in the shackin’
Shining tha light in my face, and for what?
Maybe it’s because I kick so much butt

I kick arse, or maybe ’cause I blast
On a stupid-arsed nigga when I’m playin’ with the trigga
Of any Uzi or an AK
’cause the police always got somethin’ stupid to say

Screen Shot 2015-11-06 at 08.04.44They put up my picture with silence
’cause my identity by itself causes violence
The E with the criminal behavior
Yeah, I’m a gangsta, but still I got flavour

Without a gun and a badge, what do ya got?
A sucka in a uniform waitin’ to get shot,
By me, or another nigga.
and with a gat it don’t matter if he’s smarter or bigger
M.C. Ren: Sidle him, kid, he’s from the old school, fool

Screen Shot 2015-11-06 at 08.03.22And as you all know, E’s here to rule
Whenever I’m rollin, keep lookin’ in the mirror
And there’s no cue, yo, so I can hear a
Dumb motherfucka with a gun

And if I’m rollin’ off the 8, he’ll be tha one
That I take out, and then get away
And while I’m drivin’ off laughin’
This is what I’ll say

Screen Shot 2015-11-06 at 08.05.10Fuck the police. Fuck the police. Fuck the police. Fuck the police.

The jury has found you guilty of bein’ a redneck,
whitebread, chickenshit motherfucka.
Wait, that’s a lie. That’s a goddamn lie.
I want justice! I want justice!
Fuck you, you black motherfucka!

Fuck the police. Fuck the police. Fuck the police.

We the disfranchised

Screen Shot 2015-06-02 at 08.36.47Dalrymple points out that in almost every Western democracy, many voters apprehend that

the political class (including its bureaucratic allies) has become more like a caste—a self-enclosed and self-perpetuating group of people that arrogates privileges to itself, through the enjoyment of which it insulates itself from the rest of the population, whose interests it has therefore no reason to share or understand.

The division between the political class and everyone else

is much greater than any factional divisions within the political class. Though we vote, we are disfranchised.

The main candidates in most Western elections fill decent, right-thinking people with ennui. They all

look the same: smooth-faced and without any discernible trace of individual character. None make jokes. They are earnest without being serious. I can’t bear to look at, let alone listen to, any of them.

Office-seeker extraordinaire

Screen Shot 2015-05-17 at 19.07.37Discussing people who devote their entire lives to office-seeking (from 16:36), Dalrymple cites Hillary Clinton:

Without seeking office, she doesn’t exist even for herself. Seeking office is the meaning of her existence.

This is so, Dalrymple adds, for

more and more politicians, as politics has become professionalised. More and more politicians have never done anything with their lives except politics. They’ve started at the age of 16 or 18 and gone on.

What is it about Cameron that repels?

Screen Shot 2015-05-12 at 23.26.34The British prime minister: a repulsive, ruthless sentimentalist who contemns his own countrymen

The language David Cameron uses, writes Dalrymple, is

a mixture of undignified and condescending demotic and mid-Atlantic psychobabble.

Especially repellent is

the sentimentality of what he has to say, closely allied as it is, to its utter complacency and ruthlessness, both express and implied.

Cameron’s actions, says Dalrymple,

cause me to shudder in the way I shudder when a singer misses a note. There is something wrong, kitsch or ersatz about it. An office-seeker who is prepared to parade his sentiments in public is ruthless, not sensitive. Sentimentality is frequently the reverse side of the coin of cruelty.

Implied in everything Cameron does is

contempt for the people of his own country,

whom he deems

incapable of grasping an argument about the desirability of fatherhood for children without the aid of Hello! magazine-type illustrations. This is to reduce our politics to the intellectual level of American tele-evangelism.

Ukip must be declared beyond the pale, unclean, like a mediaeval leper

The British state broadcaster is determined to place issues raised by the populists beyond the range of permissible political discussion. You can have any opinion you like, so long as it is ours.

No escape from the squalor of politics

Screen Shot 2015-04-15 at 07.55.29Britain’s prime minister, writes Dalrymple,

is Focus Group Man made flesh. This is not altogether surprising since his only known employment, other than politician, was in public relations. He appears not to know what to think until he has consulted a variety of gauges of public opinion, and then he announces his own opinion as if from deep conviction.

Dalrymple supposes that it is

naïve to want politicians to believe in something and to say what they mean. When you come to think of it, those who have done so have probably done more damage than the equivocators.

Dalrymple must be induced to enter politics

Screen Shot 2015-01-11 at 10.02.19Apathy carries a price

Dalrymple writes that throughout his life,

I have never been able to resolve my own dialectic between indifference and obsession.

A freedom that is rightly valued highly is that from the tyranny of politics. On the other hand, Dalrymple says,

if you do not go to politics, politics will come to you.

In launching our appeal to Dalrymple to step forward, we his supporters remind him of this passage in Plato (in the Republic, Book 1, Jowett tr.):

…money and honour have no attraction for them; good men do not wish to be openly demanding payment for governing and so to get the name of hirelings, nor by secretly helping themselves out of the public revenues to get the name of thieves. And not being ambitious they do not care about honour….the forwardness to take office, instead of waiting to be compelled, has been deemed dishonourable. Now the worst part of the punishment is that he who refuses to rule is liable to be ruled by one who is worse than himself. And the fear of this, as I conceive, induces the good to take office, not because they would, but because they cannot help — not under the idea that they are going to have any benefit or enjoyment themselves, but as a necessity, and because they are not able to commit the task of ruling to any one who is better than themselves, or indeed as good. For there is reason to think that if a city were composed entirely of good men, then to avoid office would be as much an object of contention as to obtain office is at present…

Insipidity’s monument

'Nothing for [the British prime minister] Cameron is a matter of principle, only of advantage, and short-term advantage at that, his sole discernible goal being that of maintaining himself in power'

‘Nothing for Cameron is a matter of principle, only of advantage, and short-term advantage at that, his sole discernible goal being that of maintaining himself in power’

Why, exactly, is David Cameron such a bore? The answer, writes Dalrymple, is that the British prime minister

calculates the effect of whatever he says upon the polls.

He is

a man as it were without qualities, good or bad, unless to be monumentally dull and boring is itself a bad quality.
